Have you ever wondered about those painful knots in your muscles?

When I’m working on a client and find a knot, or two or three or more! I’m frequently asked, “What causes knots?” and “What are knots?”

What is a knot?

When stressed or injured, muscles and soft tissue often form Trigger Points-where the contraction mechanism of the muscle gets locked into a shortened position, that causes pain and tightness.

What causes Trigger Points?

The damage to muscle and connective tissue which results in Trigger Points can occur several ways.

-repetitive overuse injuries

-sustained loading such as carrying babies, briefcases, purses and heavy lifting

-poor posture

-muscle clenching

-direct injury

-inactivity such as bed rest or prolonged sitting

Do you have Trigger Points?

Trigger Points are located through palpation of the muscles. I will assess your areas of pain, local and referred, to determine if you have any Trigger Points.

Treating Trigger Points:

Treating individual Trigger Points is usually simple and you should feel some relief rather quickly, although the relief could be temporary. Because, treating the myofascial pain so that it fully goes away takes time, patience, a treatment plan, home care and physically retraining your muscles and soft tissue.

Although static pressure held for a specific amount of time on the knot and cupping have been the most beneficial techniques, I also incorporate any of the other techniques and tools at my fingertips, (haha, get it?) to ensure you’ll get the most relief and benefits from each session.

I have found the techniques I incorporate into my massage sessions, reduce the pain associated with Trigger Points. I will work with you to develop a treatment plan and then focus each session according to your progress.
